Asuka

Ishibutai Imperial TumulusAsuka was the site of the Imperial Capital of Japan during the Asuka Period (538-710 C.E.), and afterwards the capital moved to Nara (then called Heijo-kyo). What remains of the ancient capital is presently located in Asuka village, Nara Prefecture.

Archeology projects in the area have unearthed many interesting artifacts, as well as kofun, or tumuli, including the important Ishibutai Kofun. The modern village has a small population of just over 6,500 people. One of the best way to see the various sights in Asuka is to rent a bicycle.
