Hiraizumi
Hiraizumi is a town located in the Tohoku region, the northern part of Japan’s main island Honshu. During the 11th-12th century, when this town was ruled by the Fujiwara family, it was said to rival Kyoto in splendor. To this day, some of the magnificent buildings that were erected during the 100-year reign of the Fujiwara, are beautifully preserved and Hiraizumi still counts about 3000 National Treasures. One of the highlights of any visit to the town is surely the Chuson-ji temple, and especially its Konjiki-do, a magnificent hall lacquered in foil gold and studded with gold and silver. In fact, this building is Japan’s first designated National Treasure.
