Kagoshima
Kagoshima is dramatically situated in the south of Kyushu opposite Sakurajima, an active volcano. A former castle town, the city still features a number of historic spots, mostly dating back to the Meiji Restoration (2nd half of the 19th century) when political reforms were taking place to transform Japan from a feudal to a modern unified country.
The surrounding area features small hot spring towns, beautiful nature and a number of interesting hiking trails.
