Kotohira
Kotohira is a charming town located in the countryside of Kagawa Prefecture on the island of Shikoku. Its main attraction is Kotohira-gu Shrine, colloquially known as Konpirasan, which is located on the top of a mountain. It takes a fair bit of climbing to ascend the approximately 800 steps to the main shrine, but is well worth the effort. The climb offers stunning views of the surrounding city and farmland, and there are a number of worship spots as well as vendors along the way. Konpirasan is one of Shikoku's most popular shrines.
Kotohira is also home to Kanamaruza, the oldest remaining Kabuki hall (kabuki is a type of traditional Japanese drama) in Japan. You can explore the hall and look at all the mechanisms and trapdoors. And don't forget to try the town's tasty Konpira Udon noodles!
