Shiretoko Peninsula
The name `Shiretoko` is derived from an Ainu word, meaning `end of the earth`. It is located on the northeastern extreme of Hokkaido, protruding into the Okhotsk Sea. Shiretoko National Park covers most of its area, and the peninsula area has been dedicated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
A large array of animal species exist on and around Shiretoko Peninsula, including brown bears and killer whales. It is also a volcanic area, and as a result several famous onsen (hot springs) are located there. Additionally, Shiretoko is famous for its beautiful five lakes (shiretoko goko) and waterfalls.
