Yakushima
Yakushima is an island that lies south of Kyushu, and is part of Kagoshima Prefecture. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993.
This mountainous island is covered in forests of beautiful Japanese Cedars, or sugi, and the natural forest scenery is said to have been an inspiration for the forest setting in Miyazaki Hayao's film Princess Mononoke. It is an ideal place for hiking, as numerous trails crisscross the island. Also deer and monkeys thrive there, adding to the natural scenery.
