Mountains of Central Japan Tour
Tour Itinerary Details

Mountains of Central Japan is a 15-day walking (6 days of hiking) tour starting from Kyoto. We travel north on a loop through the Japan Alps before returning to the Kansai area - Kyoto, Nara, Asuka, Yoshino, Mount Koya. The tour ends in vibrant Osaka.
80% of Japan is covered by mountains, and the Mountains of Central Japan tour will show you some of the most beautiful mountain scenery available in Japan. Haku-san, a mountain featured in this tour, is one of Japan's three holy mountains (the other two are Tateyama and Fuji-san).
The Mountains of Central Japan tour will also let you see some of the great temples of Japan, visit one of the most famous Japanese landscape gardens in Kanazawa as well as a 'Ninja' temple, and stay overnight in thatched minka farmhouses.
In addition to mountain hiking, there will be some cycling, a visit to the museum of contemporary art in Kanazawa and the 'Black Crow' feudal castle in Matsumoto, as well several days in the cultural heartland of Japan where we will stay in fine ryokan and a mountain-top Buddhist monastery.

| Destinations of Your Tour: |
 |
Kyoto - The former imperial capital of Japan. It is in this city that
the Japanese 'high arts' like tea ceremony, calligraphy and
poetry flourished. |
 |
Kanazawa - This charming town is home to Kenrokuen Garden, as well as old samurai and geisha districts. Because it was not target by allied bombings in World War II, it still retains many of its old buildings. Furthermore, much of Japan's gold leaf is made here, and can even be found in local cuisine. |
 |
Haku-san - Literally translating to "White Mountain" it is one of the three holy peaks in Japan (the other two being Fuji-san and Takayama). It offers a stunning view of the North Alps of Honshu, and because it is difficult to access by public transportation, it offers a quiet, peaceful experience. |
 |
Shirakawa-go - A UNESCO World Heritage site since 1995. The village is home to a large number of gassho-zukuri houses, large wooden houses with steep thatched roofs designed to withstand heavy snow. |
 |
Nara - Another former capital of Japan, this city is the home of various UNESCO World Heritage sites, beautifully situated in a large park where groups of deer roam freely. |
 |
Mt. Koya - A Buddhist temple complex located on a mountain surrounded by nature. One of the most important spiritual centers in Japan, Mount Koya also offers the chance to spend the night in a shukubo, one of the temple lodgings. |
 |
Osaka - The heart of the kansai region, this great metropolis has something for everyone. Known in times past as the merchants' capital of Japan, Osaka lives up to its name with huge department stores, underground shopping malls and all night entertainment districts. |
Tour Accommodation: Accommodation in family-run minshuku, traditional ryokan, hotel, mountain lodge and temple.
Kyoto, Nara, and Osaka: Western Style Hotels
Kanazawa, Shirakawa-go, Azumino, Yoshino, and Kyoto: Japanese inns (ryokan and minshuku)
Kamikochi: Mountain lodges
Mt. Koya: Buddhist temple
Please note that single rooms are normally only available in hotels – where a single room supplement may apply. Single travelers may be asked to share a room (same gender) in Kanazawa, Shirakawa-go, Azumino, Yoshino, Kyoto, Kamikochi.
Cuisine: To make sure you get the most
of your Japan experience, Japan Road tours offer a wide
variety of Japanese cuisine to enjoy. You will have the chance
to eat local specialties in small Japanese diners and sample
some of the more 'refined' Japanese cuisine.
All meals are included in the tour price.
Tour Guidance: Full time services of a Japanese-speaking British tour leader plus local Japanese guides at certain locations.
