Mountain Spirits Tour
Tour Itinerary Details
Mountain Spirits is a 13-day walking tour visiting Tokyo and northern Japan.
Our journey will take us north from Tokyo into a landscape rich in spirituality and tradition.
Though off the established tourist circuit, the sights of northern Japan can rival anywhere in the country in their beauty and atmospheric grandeur.
By traveling on Japan’s modern rail system as well as our own vehicle, we will be able to visit both the better-known, magnificent destinations, such as the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Toshogu shrine in Nikko, Yamadera, Hiraizumi and Dewa Sanzan, as well as the region’s more out of the way natural hot springs and beautiful national parks. We will take exhilarating walks through beautiful scenery and bathe in one of the famous hot springs along the way.
The tour starts and ends in Tokyo, with time for sightseeing and shopping.

| Destinations of Your Tour: |
Tokyo - Japan's capital and the largest city in the country. Shopping, bright lights, karaoke and hidden temples... welcome to the city that never sleeps. |
Nikko - The forests and mountains of Nikko have been sacred to the Japanese for 1200 years and it is here that the in 1617 the shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu had himself enshrined at Toshogu. These extravagantly ornate buildings are now on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. |
Oze Marshland - Located high in the mountains of Nikko National Park, this beautiful area is a haven for wild flowers and plants. |
Dewa Sanzan and Gas-san -
Dewa Sanzan or literally 'the three
peaks of Dewa' refers to the sacred peaks of Mount Haguro-san, Yodono-san and Gas-san. Gas-san, the highest of these mountains is covered in snow for most of the year. The way to the top is dotted with lovely small ponds and an abundance of alpine flowers. |

Tono Valley - This rural community set in a broad green valley takes great pride in its folk tales, which feature characters like the kappa, a creature that lives inside or near rivers. The town is also known for its magariya, L-shaped farmhouses. |
Nyuto Hot Springs - Nyuto Onsen is group of 'hidden hot springs' with milky white spring water, once mainly used for the recreation of samurai. |
Kakunodate - Kakunodate is a former feudal town with well preserved Samurai residences. It is said that at one time the samurai of Kakunodate became so poor their lord set them to making craft work. Today, the town is still famous for these relics of samurai culture and fine cherry-bark craft work. |
